In the early hours of a Friday morning, tragedy struck on Interstate 15, just south of Temecula, as a 23-year-old motorist lost her life in a devastating crash. The incident occurred shortly before 5 a.m. on northbound I-15 at Rainbow Valley Boulevard, leaving the community of Murrieta mourning the loss of a young life.
According to reports from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the victim, identified only as a Murrieta woman, was driving a 2021 Honda Accord in the slow lane when the vehicle drifted onto the right shoulder. The Honda then collided with a freeway perimeter chain-link fence before striking a hillside embankment and ricocheting back towards the northbound traffic lanes. Despite the harrowing crash, the vehicle came to rest facing in a southeasterly direction, partially obstructing lanes 2 and 3.
Tragically, the woman exited her vehicle and stood in the No. 2 lane, where she was subsequently struck by a 38-year-old man driving a 2017 Honda Civic. The Civic driver, an Oceanside resident, was unable to avoid the collision, despite attempting to brake upon seeing the woman directly in his path. The impact of the collision threw her in a northerly direction, resulting in fatal injuries.
Emergency responders from the Riverside County Fire Department swiftly arrived at the scene, but tragically, there was nothing they could do to save the young woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind a devastated family.
The driver of the Civic sustained minor injuries and was transported to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar for treatment. Fortunately, there were no further injuries reported in subsequent minor spinoff collisions that occurred following the initial tragic incident.
The aftermath of the crash led to the closure of all northbound lanes on I-15, stretching from San Diego County into Riverside County. The closure, which began just after 5 a.m., resulted in a significant traffic backlog and prompted a SigAlert. While lanes were gradually reopened throughout the morning, it wasn’t until after 10 a.m. that the closure was fully lifted.
